COVID Recommendations for Adults

Medications

  • Over-the-counter medications won’t make COVID-19 go away faster, but they can help relieve your symptoms.
  • The following vitamins are recommended for 14 days: Vitamin C 1,000mg daily, Vitamin D3 2,000 units daily and Zinc 50mg daily. Children should take a multivitamin in place of the above.   You can take Emergen-C or other OTC Immune support.
  • Fever-reducing medicines that contain acetaminophen or ibuprofen to help treat fever, body aches, and headaches.
  • If you have congestion or your cough feels thick in your chest, you can take a chest decongestant that contains the active ingredient guaifenesin. If you have high blood pressure, consult with your doctor before taking a decongestant. Those with High Blood Pressure can take Coricidin HBP or its generic equivalent.
  • For a runny nose, you can take a daily Antihistamine (Zyrtec, Claritin, Benadryl) or use a Allergy Nasal Spray.
  • If you have a cough, you can take an OTC Cough suppressant medicines that contain the active ingredient dextromethorphan or menthol.
  • For Diarrhea, take an Antidiarrheal medicines that contain the active ingredient bismuth subsalicylate or loperamide
  • To soothe a sore throat – Gargle salt water or use throat lozenges.

***Antibiotics won’t make COVID-19 go away faster. Don’t take antibiotics unless your healthcare provider tells you to.

***Steroids are not recommended for COVID-19 and may cause your condition to get worse. Do not take steroids unless recommended by your healthcare provider.

Drink plenty of fluids. Water, juice, clear broth or warm lemon water are good choices. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can dehydrate you.

Sip warm liquids. Chicken soup and other warm fluids, such as tea or warm apple juice, can be soothing and can loosen congestion. Honey may help coughs in adults and children who are older than age 1. Try it in hot tea.

Rest. Stay home from work or school. This will give you a chance to rest and heal, as well as reduce the chances that you'll spread the virus to others.

Adjust your room's temperature and humidity. Keep your room warm, but not overheated. If the air is dry, a cool-mist humidifier or vaporizer can moisten the air and help ease congestion and coughing. Clean your humidifier according to the manufacturer's directions to prevent the growth of bacteria and molds.

If you develop shortness of breath – Go to your nearest emergency room.

RESTRICTIONS DURING ISOLATION

• Remain at home and avoid all public activities. These means do not go to work, church, school, stores (including grocery stores), nor any public events or places.
• Do not have visitors in your home.
• If you live in a home with other people, stay in a separate room. If that is not possible, wear a face mask when you are in the same room as others and stay at least 6 feet away from them (i.e. practice social distancing even in your home).
• Wash your hands and use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer often. Do not share personal items such as dishes, cups, forks, spoons, towels, etc.
• Do not leave your home except to get urgent or emergency medical care. If you need to see a doctor for reasons other than a medical emergency, please call your medical provider ahead of time to make proper arrangements.
• In the event of a medical emergency, call 911. Tell them that you are in home isolation due to a COVID-19 infection. Keep a face mask on until a health care provider asks you to remove it. If you do not have a mask, use a folded kerchief or another similar device to cover your nose and mouth.
• Do not use any public transportation (buses, taxis, rideshare services, or airplanes).
• Check yourself for fever twice a day. This means taking your temperature in the morning and before bed at night and writing down the reading each time.
• If you begin to have additional symptoms, or if you otherwise feel sick, contact your health care provider.
